Welding equipment

• Automatic wedge welders (fusion welding): a heated wedge melts the two overlapping sheets and pressure rollers join them as the machine travels along the seam. Used for the long field seams between panels.
• Extrusion welders: hand-held machines that lay a bead of molten HDPE over the prepared overlap. Used for details, corners, pipe penetrations, patches and repairs.
• Hot air guns: for tacking the sheets in place and preparing the overlap before extrusion welding.

Testing equipment

• Vacuum boxes: a box with a transparent top is sealed over the wetted seam, and any leak shows as bubbles under vacuum
• Spark testers: for finding pinholes in welds
• Tensiometers: for testing trial welds and seam samples in peel and shear

Before you weld

• Match the equipment to the sheet: wedge and extrusion welders are made for a range of sheet thicknesses, so tell us the material and thickness you will be welding
• Plan a stable power supply: on most sites that means a generator sized for all the machines running at the same time
• Run trial welds every day, and whenever conditions change, and test them in peel and shear before production welding
• Have the welding done by trained welding technicians: the result depends on the operator as much as on the machine

Prefer us to do the welding?

If you would rather not weld yourself, we weld and test your liner as a specialist lining subcontractor, with our own welding technicians and equipment. We can also supply the HDPE geomembrane and geotextile.
